About
Canadian with 13 years in Japan writing about tech and society, Buddhism, travel, and more!
I work in tech (#opensource #DWeb #a11y) and read international relations, politics, and SFF books, practice Buddhism, and have been vegetarian since 2015 when I started waking up to the climate crisis. You can read more about my history on my full About page (I also have a Uses page there too!), but here is a TLDR:
- Professionally I consult for software companies at Shōjin where you can get info on how to hire me. I have availability now
- I am active in the DWeb Vancouver community.
- Engaged in the digital sovereignty debate with the Public AI Network.
- On the board for GoodBot Society which does policy analysis and education programs for responsible tech.
- Run Protocols for Publishers ✨, a community and event series that brings together web publishers and protocol developers to discuss the future of promoting agency on the open web.
I am kind of known for taking my family to a small island between Japan and Korea for a year, writing book reviews and lots of travel reports (old blog | new blog). For example see:
- Discovering deep history in London and London Part 2
- Taiwan trip report
- Notes from Germany and Walking through history in Heidelberg
- Living “with volcano” — a trip to Shimabara
- The Bridges of Nagasaki
- Unzen – Where foreigners go to hell to cool off
- Driving Iwate: The 3/11 tsunami 12 years later
- Driving Fukushima: The 3/11 nuclear disaster 12 years later
- Malaysia “Truly Asia” Part 1 and Part 2
- Impressions of Lisbon
- Istanbul
- India
…and lots more.
Sometimes I even combine a book review and travel report such as:
