Rice-Like-Life-Light Work

Came across a framework today from Japanese self-help and business management speak: “Ricework vs Lifework”. This is a borderline pun in Japanese (only one character different between the words) so it has high memetic power. Poking around a bit I couldn’t find a single origin, it is just kind of all over the place. Others have expanded on it too.

Here are the four levels that seem common:

ライスワーク (Rice Work): Work that pays the bills. This is how you earn a living, in the same sense of being a “breadwinner.”

ライクワーク (Like Work): Work that you actually enjoy (as opposed to mere “rice work”), and want to get better at.

ライフワーク (Life Work): Your life’s “calling”. This is your passion project, which may or may not be professional.

ライトワーク (Light Work): This one is a bit different. The others are more about the self, and this one is about working for others, as in doing volunteer work with the idea of “shining a light”.

All four are just a single character change: ス (su) → ク (ku) → フ (fu) → ト (to). The last one is a bit of an outlier.

There is a connotation that the framework is actually a pyramid with the Lightwork on the top (as per the illustration below from this source) like Maslow’s pyramid, but you might also think of it as a “Wellness Wheel” which requires balance.

Similar to ikigai, this is a framework for thinking about self actualization.

Just thought I would note it since I had not come across the Japanese term “rice work” before.
